I started blogging in 2007. I write a blog called Interview Mantra that uses the Blogger platform. In the beginning, the average number of visitors that I used to get per day was less than 10. By then, I had already posted around 20-30 articles and I wondered why I got such a low traffic. I then searched the internet on how to improve traffic to a Blogger blog. I then found an invaluable trick; the meta tags.
After using meta tags my traffic multiplied almost by 6x. Having said that, please remember that meta tags don’t work magically. You need to optimize what you write in those meta tags for good results. Let me also warn you that abuse of meta tags can result in degradation of traffic!
Meta tags are html tags that are used by Google for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Read more about meta tags. There are two meta tags that are important for SEO: description and keywords meta tags. More important of these tags is the description tag.
Here is how a description meta tag looks like for this blog post:
<meta content='Guest post of Sridhar Jammalamadaka at BloggerNutshull.com on importance of meta tags for SEO traffic boost of a blog. This post also describes how to add meta tags in a Blogger blog ' name='description'/>
Here is how a keywords meta tag looks like for this blog post:
<meta content='email etiquette, email dos and donts, professional email, email writing, students' name='keywords'/>
Now there are two frequently asked questions that need to be addressed:
1. How can I put these meta tags in my Blogger Blog?
Go to Edit HTML of your Template, copy paste the below code right below <head> tag of your template.
Before you copy paste the code below make sure you have changed the text in bold suiting the article for which you would like to add meta tags. For example if you would like to add meta tags for a page in your blog with url: http://www.interviewmantra.net/2009/10/10-tips-for-professional-email-writing.html
Then, copy the url of this page and replace with the text in maroon color in the <b:if cond=”” ….=””> tag (first line in the code below). Also change the description to a short unique description that tells something about that page. Replace the bold text in keywords meta tag with keywords that are relevant to your blog post.
<b:if cond='data:blog.url == "http://www.bloggernutshell.com/2009/10/traffic-booster-meta-tags.html"'>
<meta content='Guest post of Sridhar Jammalamadaka at BloggerNutshell.com on importance of meta tagsfor SEO traffic boost of a blog. This post also describes how to add meta tags in a Blogger blog ' name='description'/>
<meta content='email etiquette, email dos and donts, professional email, email writing, students' name='keywords'/> </b:if>
2. Should I do this for every page of my blog?
I’m sure you’re expecting I’d say no, but unfortunately it is YES. You’ll have to add this code for each page of your blog if you need better search results. Do not worry about the size of the template as the number of articles keep growing – I have added meta tags in my blog’s template for 70 posts!
